ABOUT THIS SITE
Mimi Magic is part of a larger collective of X Files-themed websites I run called deslea's eXegesis. That's me, by the way - Deslea. I'm a long-standing Phile with a dedicated interest in going beyond the basement. Supporting characters, less popular on-screen relationships, you name it, I'm there. I must confess that a big part of my interest in Mimi was born of perversity. If people in the mainstream react strongly against someone, I usually bat for them on principle. In Mimi's case, I felt she brought a lot of warmth to her role and that much of the Phile backlash was based around factors other than Mimi or even of the character she played.
So that's how it began. But the more I saw of her work, the more I liked her - and not only her work, but the manner in which she conducts herself. I love the way she always has a smile for the cameras. I love the way she takes her kids everywhere. I love all the philanthropic stuff she does. I've never met the woman and probably never will, but there are a lot of things she does in her day-to-day life that I find really endearing. There are plenty of good actresses in this world, but there are fewer decent human beings. So that's got a lot to do with why this site began.
There is a dark side, of course, as any prominent online identity will tell you. I have been threatened for my Mimi-supportive stance, and I have been targeted in a less severe way for my support of Laurie Holden (XF's Marita) as well. The fandom, and the internet overall, can be a dark and scary place sometimes. But I believe in building up, not breaking down. I believe that when we shut up and shut down in response to the negative, we promote the growth of that negative. I believe we disempower negativity only by flooding it with optimism and affirmation. And that's kind of what I'm doing here.
We began in March 2002, pulling together content I'd already been passing on to other XF sites in earlier times. Design version 1.0, Lucy Ciaffa, was a black-and-white theme based on the lovely photo of Mimi with her daughter (here). We were originally at eFanGuide.com, who were just brilliant in getting us started. But I wanted to spread my wings a bit, get a bit more space and freedom, so we moved in with my friend Gertiebeth in August as hostees on her fabulous Web-Glitter network, added a great new citrus-toned layout based on the photo shoot of Mimi in front of a mirror (2.0 Sunshine Days), added heaps of content we couldn't put up before, and incorporated the Mimi Rogers fanlisting. In December 2003, Gertie called it a day on webhosting, and we migrated to a blend of my own server and my friend Steph's Webphilia. That hosting arrangement later fell down due to movements out of the fandom after the show ended. So now, it's all together on deslea.com, which is probably for the best.
Now, the admin. No money is being made from this site. It's by fans, for fans. Revenue generated from the shopping buttons (which are gradually being removed now that we've moved) goes straight back into supporting Web-Glitter, who give us generous amounts of space and bandwidth for free. Excess Web-Glitter money goes to charitable concerns. This site does not intend to infringe on the commercial interests of any party. It is not authorised by Miss Rogers or any other stakeholder. It's just me sharing the Mimi-love with my friends. ;-)
Finally, thanks as always to Gertiebeth, Steph, Kristen, Linzee, Emily, Sally-Ann, Darren, and all my Harem friends. I couldn't do it without you.
Enjoy your stay at Mimi Magic!
